THOUSANDS lined the streets of Chippenham and Calne on Sunday to pay their respects during the annual Remembrance Parade.

A remembrance service was held at St Andrew’s Church in Chippenham before the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sarah Troughton, Chippenham town mayor David Powell, and other dignitaries laid wreaths at the war memorial.

A 70-strong parade, including soldiers from the Hullavinton-based 9th Regiment of the Royal Logistics Core, members of the Royal British Legion and sea and army cadets, then marched through the high street.

The Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mayor David Powell and the Commanding Office of the RLC all took the salute outside the town hall.

Deputy parade marshal, Julie Shore, said: “It was brilliantly well attend as always. I would say there was a least 300 in the parade and a couple of thousand watching, it’s always a good turnout in Chippenham.”

An evening service at St Paul's Church, aimed at the younger generations, was also well attended by various Girl Guiding and Scout groups from across the town.

Calne also came to a standstill on Sunday as veterans, serving officers, cadets and many others remembered those who were injured or killed in the line of duty for their country.

After gathering at the old Post Office in the town centre, the Royal British Legion, RAF Association, cadets, veterans and many others, paraded through the town to Church Street to attend a Remembrance Sunday service in St Mary’s Church on Church Street.

A two-minute silence was observed outside the church at 11am before wreaths were laid at the war memorial.

Paul Ellis, of Calne Royal British Legion, said: “It went very well and there was a very good attendance from the town.”
