Supermarket Morrisons are looking to extend the hours in which lorries can make deliveries to their Chippenham store.

The store on Cepen Park Way has applied to Wiltshire Council for planning permission to extend the hours to 5am until 11pm, Monday to Saturday, and 7am to 11pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

Currently, the supermarket is restricted to accepting goods between 7am and 8pm every day of the week as a condition of their expansion in 2007.

At the time, this was done in the interests of amenity of nearby residential properties in Cepen Park North.

Wiltshire councillor for Chippenham Cepen Park and Redlands, Nina Phillips, said: “Five in the morning is extremely early and it’s a residential area so I would say it’s not a good idea.

“I would think most people would be against it from what I have got from the application, it’s not a good idea I don’t think.”

In their application, Morrisons state that are looking to achieve more convenient delivery hours and bring the stores’ deliveries into line with other Morrisons stores around the country.

It is expected that the application will be discussed at the next Chippenham Town Council planning committee meeting which is due to take place on August 27.

A Morrisons spokesman said: “Our stores include a wide range of fresh produce to complement our focus on fresh fruit, vegetables fish and meat.

“As a result we need to amend our delivery times to get our products on the shelves as soon as possible.

“We strive to be a good neighbour and we welcome discussions with Wiltshire Council to finalise the plans.”

Comments on the proposals can be sent to Wiltshire Council case officer Charmian Burkey before September 10.
