CHIPPENHAM Sailing and Canoeing Club has opened its much improved hygiene facilities after a refurbishment costing more than £100,000.

A cesspit, dilapidated changing sheds and a single unisex toilet have been replaced with a water treatment plant and three separate units for male, female and disabled use, each including a toilet, shower and changing room.

It is the first time Chippenham’s club, a PaddleAbility club, has been able to offer an accessible changing unit to people with disabilities.

Julia Mannering, one of the coaches who led the project, said: “The project has taken two years to bring to fruition. I’ve been overwhelmed with the support that the club has received from the funding bodies.

“The new units will meet demand as our club continues to expand and develop.”

Sport England gave £54,000 as part of their Inspired Facilities programme to improve and encourage sport. Viridor Credits awarded the Club £16,500 for the water treatment plant, through the Landfill Communities Fund, while £20,000 came from Wiltshire Council, £12,000 from Chippenham Borough Lands Charity and £1,500 from Chippenham Town Council.

Using the river to its full potential is one of Chippenham Area Board’s current three priorities.

Chippenham Mayor David Powell opened the new facilities last Tuesday. (JUN 16) After the official opening ceremony, the club entertained visitors with a river trip, either paddling in a katakanu or for the less intrepid on a power boat.
