A MAN who is accused of leading police on a ten minute chase through Chippenham in a stolen Land Rover Defender is to face trial by judge and jury.

David Way is said to have driven the vehicle on Malmesbury Road, Old Road, Union Road, Station Road, Bath Road and Rowden Hill on Saturday, March 14.

The 52-year-old, of Beaminster, Dorset, pleaded not guilty to aggravated taking without consent and dangerous driving when he appeared at Swindon Crown Court.

Recorder Don Tait adjourned the case to Tuesday, November 17, and released Way on bail until then.

Police are said to have spotted the vehicle entering the town at about 1.30pm on the A350 from Melksham and tried to stop it near Brewers Fayre at Cepen Park.

It is alleged the green Land Rover made off at speed, evading traffic by running red lights and driving over central islands in the face of oncoming traffic.

A helicopter from the National Police Air Service, was called out from Filton, near Bristol, and another two police cars were used to find locations for stingers.

The incident came to an end when the Land Rover was in collision with a car on Rowden Hill.
