TWELVE teams have already signed up for Chippenham's dragon boat races next month.

And more than 100 spectators are expected to descend upon Monkton Park for the seventh annual event, on Saturday July 11.

Led by the rhythmic beat of a drum, teams of up to 16 synchronized paddlers and one drummer will race 250 metres along the River Avon in 20-foot dragon boats, many in fancy dress.

It is the fifth time that Goughs in Chippenham have taken part. Jonathan Shipton, a partner at the solicitors, said: “I’m delighted to report that our team are shipshape and ready to board.

“With it being the fifth year running that we’ve put a team forwards, we are aiming to lead from the front and put in our fastest time yet. This could be our year.”

Last year’s race had 14 teams competing and was won by Corsham heating firm Ultra-Warm, who completed the 250 metre course along the River Avon in one minute 13 seconds, beating the Army’s 9th Regiment at Buckley Barracks by a millisecond.

Teams raise money through sponsorship for a charity of their choice, and so far the event has raised over £65,000.

Len Goodridge, of organisers Chippenham Wiltshire Vale Rotary Club, said: “We always look forward to hosting this event. It really does bring the community and local businesses together to help raise vital funds for so many local good causes.

“We encourage everyone to come along and take part or to cheer along your favourite dragon boat. There are medals to be won and a prize for the best dressed crew so let your imagination go wild.”

Also on the day, 10am to 4pm on July 11, there will be food stalls, games and a beer tent in Monkton Park.

Chippenham Rotary Club said the Art in the Park family fun day would not be going ahead this year, because of a lack of manpower, but they will be organising a bouncy castle and burger van and hope the art event will be back next year.

To sign up up for the races, register at www.rotary-chippenham-wv.org.uk. No previous experience is required and boats are provided.
