A RACE at Castle Combe Circuit will compete for a trophy in memory of one of its best-loved characters later this year.

Former test driver Terry Sanger, who died in August 2013 aged 79, had a lengthy and broad association with Castle Combe, in later years as a highly respected instructor and race official.

The  popular Castle Combe Autumn Classic race meeting on Saturday October 3 will feature a new race for pre 1966 Historic Touring Cars, with drivers competing for the Terry Sanger Trophy.

The popular engineer and racing driver Sanger raced a wide variety of vehicles, becoming a works driver for Marcos cars, based in his then home town of Bradford on Avon.

Many of his successes were with a series of saloon cars – Lotus Cortina, Ford Cortina V8, Ford Falcon and Chevrolet Camaro – so the new historic saloons race at the Autumn Classic will be a fitting tribute to a highly popular Castle Combe figure.

Event co-ordinator Neil Thomas commented; “Visitors to the Autumn Classic are always treated to spectacular racing featuring some very rare and prestigious marques.  The saloon race will complement the programme beautifully and will be a huge hit with spectators.  As the racing versions of the 60s family saloons do battle on the track, there will no doubt be a chorus of “I used to have one of those!” ringing from the spectator banks!”

In addition to the new saloon race the organisers are delighted to welcome back all the firm favourites from previous years comprising; Austin Healeys, Historic Aston Martins,  pre 1966 Jaguars, Pre-War Sports Cars, 50s Inter-Marque, and  Historic Formula Junior and Formula 3 500 racing cars.
