PURPLE was the colour in Chippenham town centre last Wednesday as Chippenham Stroke Club gathered to support the Stroke Association’s awareness month.

In total, 26 stalwart members of the Chippenham Stroke Club, and dog Bizzy with her purple-sprayed tail, braved strong winds to gather in various shades of purple to hand out leaflets and raise awareness.

The club, founded in 1989, is made up of sufferers, carers and helpers and run entirely by volunteers supporting people in and around Chippenham who have suffered a stroke.

Committee member Cilla Labouchere said: “What happens so often when people have a stroke is that you are looked after brilliantly, then people find themselves back at home with nobody to go to, they find themselves lost.

“We hope we have raised awareness of our club for other stroke sufferers who could benefit by joining the club and also our need for more able-bodied help.”

A person in England has a stroke every 3.5 minutes and for those who survive, it can be severely disabling.

The club meets on alternate Wednesdays for a wide variety of activities, speakers and outings. A group also goes to the hydrotherapy pool at St Nicholas’ School in Chippenham every fortnight to exercise in the warm water.

Anyone who has suffered a stroke is welcome to join the club which offers the fun, friendship and encouragement to face the resulting problems of a stroke.
