The man responsible for setting up the UK’s first Rotary owned hall in Chippenham has died aged 85.

The funeral of Bob Stacey, a Chippenham Rotary Club member for 45 years, was held yesterday.

He passed away peacefully at his home in Hardenhuish Lane on January 20, leaving his wife Muriel, who he married in 1955, and their daughter, Debbie.

Mr Stacey’s brother Brian said: “He organised the purchase of a building in Station Hill [in the 1980s] that became the first Rotary owned hall in UK, meaning no hiring costs for events, and more money for charities.”

Mr Stacey received a Paul Harris award for long and distinguished service to Rotary and was president of the Chippenham club in 1986.

Fellow Rotarian Tony Winterton said: “Bob was a great friend of mine from the time he first joined the Rotary in 1970.
