Children from a Calne school have used the powers of Lego and robotics to fine- tune the way people with learning disabilities are taught to play a musical
instrument.

The pupils from St Margaret’s Preparatory School impressed the judges at the regional heats of the First LEGOLeague competition held at Hewlett Packard in Bristol and came away with the Core Values Trophy.

The pupils from Year 6, who adopted the name Lego Lunatics, made it to the semi-finals of the main competition for teams from across the south west and finished third, just missing out on a place in the final.

The theme for this year’s contest was ‘The Future of Learning’ and the team researched ways adults could better understand how children need and want to learn.

They then went on to try and find a better way to teach playing a musical instrument to someone disabled and programmed a robot which will solve a set of demanding missions.

Headmistress Karen Cordon said: “The Lego Lunatics represented St Margaret’s superbly both in terms of presentation
and programming.

“The LEGOLeague is always an amazing experience for all concerned.”
