John Coles Park in Chippenham will be a mass of colour in the spring thanks to a plantathon by environmental community group The Nature Of It.

Volunteers spent four hours on Saturday planting 2,000 daffodil bulbs in a flowing swirl design.

Group founder Leanne Taylor said: “We were very pleased with the turnout and level of support, it shows people are passionate about regenerating our local green spaces. We had around 30 people over the course of the day and were planting an hour after the event was scheduled to finish as the group was so keen on getting the design finished.”

The plantathon was part of a larger Blooming Bulbs project that will transform key areas of Chippenham when they flower.

Town councillor Melody Thompson came up with the idea of using nature to brighten up Chippenham’s neighbourhoods and thousands of bulbs have been provided by the town council.

Last Wednesday saw children from the Chippenham Partnership of Schools planting by the railway arches, while over the past month the town council’s leisure and amenities team has been busy around the town.

Adrian Jones, head of service delivery at Chippenham Town Council, said: “Groups are being offered a bag of daffodil bulbs to plant at their school, sports club or premises.”

Coun Thompson said: “I am delighted to see this project come to fruition. Planting bulbs is a very worthwhile investment in the presentation of our town.”
