A team of medical staff in Chippenham has raised more than £1,300 to help tackle the Ebola crisis.

Everybody at Hathaway Medical Centre pitched in to keep a bike at the Middlefield Road centre going non-stop for 24 hours last Wednesday and Thursday.

A total of about 40 doctors, dentists, nurses and admin staff helped to rack up the miles, at an average of 15.4mph on the lead bike.

They managed to cycle 370 miles, as far as the most northern town in England, Berwick-Upon-Tweed.

Nurse manager Donna Egbeare said: “Everybody gave up at least half an hour of their time. There were a few sore bottoms.”

Some 2.5 million people are affected by the Ebola crisis, with Sierra Leone and Liberia being some of the worst affected areas.

Senior partner at Hathaway Dr Tony Wright said: “Ebola is such a dreadful viral infection killing 70 per cent of individuals affected, blighting the lives of survivors and orphaning thousands of children in West Africa.

“The UK Disaster Emergency Committee is working to stop the spread of the disease, to care for individuals affected and to support those left behind. It needs our financial support to stop the epidemic.”
