A free Chippenham service showing elderly people how to get online could fold unless more people use it.

The drop-in group was well supported when it launched in February last year but the number of people using it has dwindled since August, and unless more sign up it will be unsustainable.

The project, a partnership between Wiltshire Council and the Rotary Club of Chippenham, aims to help those with little or no previous computer experience and gently introduces newcomers to the world of the internet, emails and Skyping.

Use of the computers is free of charge, although anyone who wants to bring their own laptop or tablet for guidance is welcome to do so.

Project leader Rotarian Diana Wright is convinced there are still many people in the Chippenham community who could benefit from this service.

She said: “We are gearing our service to provide for everyone. However, there are two sections of the community which we think could benefit most and these are job seekers and our senior citizens.

“Many job vacancies are advertised online, or require an application online. This presumes that everyone knows how to use a computer, although this is clearly not always the case.

“We are also keen to show how a computer can open up communications through emails and Skype, something many families find helpful.”

One-to-one tuition is provided by trained Rotary helpers, called digital champions, at the Salvation Army’s Citadel every Tuesday from 1.15pm to 2.45pm.
