Diggers have moved in to Wiltshire College at Chippenham to prepare the ground for the new £20m campus.
The college and construction firm Willmott Dixon were holding a milestone ceremony today with the first turf being cut by Chippenham MP Duncan Hames, who helped to secure the Skills Funding Agency grant towards the rebuild.
Other guests due to attend include the college’s acting principal Amanda Burnside, its chair of governors Helen Birchenough and Chippenham mayor John Scragg.
Mrs Burnside said: “This is a landmark project for both the college and the wider community of Chippenham and we are very excited to be starting work on it.”
The new 9,100 sq m (98,000 sq ft) building, comprising three wings connected in the middle, is due to be complete in September 2015 in time for the new academic year.
The existing site is to be kept open alongside construction work and will be demolished in the final stage.
