Charity stalwart's award bid
11:00am Monday 16th July 2012 in Calne
Charity fundraiser Ella Courtney is in the running for a national award for her efforts to help the Macular Disease Society.
Mrs Courtney, 71, of Park Close, Calne, has been nominated in the fundraiser of the year category at the MD Society annual awards.
She has been raising money for the society for years, as her husband Denis has the disease, which affects vision in later life.
This year alone she has raised more than £4,000 from tea parties and challenges.
Alongside daughter Tanya Beresford, she took part in a 26-mile walk from Avebury to Stonehenge.
Mrs Courtney said: “It’s very nice to be nominated for the award. I’m amazed that I have been put forward for it.
“My husband has macular disease and we were given lots of information from the society when he was first diagnosed. Being informed about the condition is very important.
“Without the information from the society, life would have been much more difficult for both of us.
“We got involved with the society from going to the Swindon support group. My husband was already a member of the charity, but that was how we first met people.
“There is still a lot of work to be done to raise awareness.
“I’ve fundraised with some really inspiring people, including an 86-year-old lady who rowed 86 kilometres during a four-week period.”
The award winners will be announced when the MD Society holds its national conference on September 22 in London.
