The surrounding parish councils are the latest to voice their opposition to the proposed development of the Hills Waste site at Lower Compton.

Hills has entered plans to develop the recycling arm of its operation at the site, constructing new buildings and moving much of the process indoors.

Now both Compton Bassett and Calne Without parish councils have voted against the proposals, backing the town council and the Calne A4 – Say No More campaign group.

Compton Bassett Parish Council members have been handing out flyers encouraging local people to visit the Wiltshire Council website before the November 25 deadline and register their opinion.

This week the town council’s working group met to discuss Hills chief executive Mike Hill and director of waste management Mike Webster’s response to recent criticism in last week’s Gazette.

The group rebuffed the claim that Lower Compton was the most appropriate site and Mr Webster’s comments that moving the site to Stanton St Quintin would create more traffic.

They also suggested a cross-site road connecting the Hills site with the Viridor waste site at Sandpit Road.

A Compton Bassett spokesperson said: “There are no benefits to the local community.

“No additional local jobs, no bypass to move the HGVs away from Calne town centre, no benefit from the sale or processing of the waste.

“We just get more HGVs, more disruption and a greater reinforcement of Calne and the surrounding villages’ image as the waste capital of the south west.”

A statement from Calne Without said: “This new facility would be permanent, even though Hills’ last application was granted on the basis Lower Compton would be restored to green fields by 2022 at the latest.

“People living in and around Calne have suffered long enough with this site on their doorstep.”
