Supermarket closed by blaze

Sainsburys in Calne remains closed today as experts investigate a fire which started in a cigarette kiosk yesterday evening while the shop was open for trade.

Staff tried to tackle the blaze which broke out just after 8pm but they were beaten back by the smoke and the store was evacuated.

One appliance from Calne and two from Chippenham attended the blaze at supermarket in The Pippin.

Fire Crew manager Steve Lodge of Chippenham Fire Station said: "The fire was out minutes after our arrival but the building was quite heavily smoke logged and so took a while to clear."

Sainsbury's duty manager John Slater Brooks said: "We will almost certainly remain shut for the rest of today to allow investigators to do their job."
