Calne police station gets planning permission

Planning permission for a new police station in Calne has been granted by the local authority.

The police station is being rebuilt because the current building is in poor condition and does not facilitate modern policing or have appropriate access for visitors. The old building is also larger than is actually required resulting in expensive overheads and maintenance costs.

Construction is due to begin in December 2009 with the building expected to be completed in May 2010 and ready for occupation the following month. During the building process the Neighbourhood Policing Team will work from an office in the Town Hall to ensure that visibility and reassurance of the police presence is maintained.

Chief Inspector Gavin Williams said: ‘Having received planning permission, I am really pleased that the project is taking shape and progressing well. The new station in Calne will continue to ensure a visible presence within Calne and provide an effective base for the Neighbourhood Policing Team to work from for many years to come.

I look forward to the next stage and will continue to keep the local Community informed of the progress being made.’ If members of the public have any enquiries regarding the new police station they can call 01380 734060 or email estates@wiltshire.pnn.police.uk

It's nice to know that Wiltshire Police can afford to build a new Police Station in Calne which 'will continue to ensure a visible presence within Calne'. In Devizes we have a perfectly good police station but no visible police presence.

A visible presence in Calne? - you have got to be joking; we report anything and hours/days later they turn up when the problem has happened and the offenders well and truly gone. We get the police helicopter over us all the time yet most of the time thats because the police rent it out as a money maker and now known offenders know that so dont worry if they see it hovering over them

I just wonder if a police station building application has ever been turned down!!

I've checked the calendar. It's not April 1st so the report must be correct.
What an absolute disgrace. Does Chief Inspector Gavin Williams really believe a new building will ensure a visible presence? A visible presence implies there will be police on the streets. I don't think so...apart from toy police. They could always use the Woolworths shop instead, at least they will be on the scene for any trouble in the town centre.

As long as they have a nice place to sit and eat doughnuts that's all that matters, sod the rising crime!!!!!

How about using the Post Office building in the High Street. It's got parking at the back and a frontage opposite the kebab shop where most of the chavs hang out and 2 mins from most trouble. The PO could relocate to Portmarsh (much more room for the big vans & lorries) The current police station could be sold off for housing. You don't really need a station where it currently is, nothing happens up at that end.

Can you remember Policeman with legs! When presence meant on the streets! But now it seems they need a cosy station to go with their posy vehicles! It seems Calne Police station will only be open if it is brand new and virtually closed until then! Have they lost the plot!

That's not a bad idea.
