NORTH Calne’s brand new Beversbrook sports ground has beaten off the competition to be chosen as a NatWest CricketForce showcase club.
The £1.75m facility is not yet open but on April 4 cricket supporters are being urged to volunteer to undertake some final alterations to the pavilion and cricket ground.
Calne Cricket Club will be housed at Beversbrook from next year and members were approached by Wiltshire Cricket Force to enter the scheme, which sees businesses donating money and equipment to renovate clubs.
Chairman Martin Butler said: “We have had companies donating materials to re-lay the patio overlooking the ground and for a new storage shed.
“The idea is to get volunteers to help so we can make them aware of what we achieve as a club.”
All the building work will take place on April 4 and sports clubs will also be offering taster sessions.
Calne Cricket Club currently uses the recreation ground off Anchor Road but players will start training at Beversbrook as the season gets underway this year.
Mr Butler said: “We are hoping that we will use the nets this year but we will not be playing on the main cricket field until 2010.”
The 54-acre Beversbrook site will offer 11 football pitches, two cricket squares, cricket nets, a multi-sports court, a meeting room, kitchen and eight changing rooms.
On April 3, Calne Cricket Club will host a sportsmen’s dinner at the leisure centre with the former chairman of the England Test selectors, David Graveney, as guest speaker.
