A HISTORIC hotel in Calne has been awarded three AA stars Gold, while its restaurant maintains its rosettes.

The Lansdowne Strand, owned by Arkells Brewery has been recognised for its quality of service, excellent housekeeping and well its improved breakfast offering. Head chef Joel Lear has also kept his two rosettes for the coaching inn's restaurant.

Mr Lear, who runs the hotel with his wife Anna, are both delighted to have won the award. She said: "This is an industry mark and shows just how far we have come since taking over a year ago.

"The staff have been fantastic and this is one of the reasons we have been able to achieve this in what feels like record time. We also need to thank Arkells for all investment in the building."

In the last year, the hotel has undergone a makeover, with almost all rooms being redecorated and refurbished, giving it a more modern feel.

Speaking about the restaurant's two rosettes, Mr Lear said: “When coming here I wanted to bring a fresh approach to the food offering. We have traditional dishes but by linking up with local and regional suppliers we have been able to create an a la carte menu that rivals anything in the area.

"I am very proud of what the kitchen team have done in such a short time.”
