A MUCH needed community asset in Calne is at risk of closure if it doesn't secure £15,000 of funding.

A Place 4 Us, Calne's only disability youth club could face imminent closure if it doesn't find funding by December, when Wiltshire Council will no longer fund the scheme.

The club only started life last December when it was noted that a disability youth club was needed, and committee members are upset that it may have to close despite how successful it has been.

Carla Marygold, chair of A Place 4 Us, said: "We are desperate to keep this club going.

"If we don't get his money this club closes, but it is really important for our young people as they don't have the same opportunities as other young people.

"Others can go off into town with their friends, our young kids can't do that. They are reliant on parents and clubs.

"They can feel safe and secure when they are there, and without that they don't have those opportunities."

A Place 4 Us provides a safe place for disabled children to play, learn and make lifelong friendships.

Despite a long waiting list, the club can only accommodate for ten children, who meet every Tuesday during term time at Marden house 7pm-9pm.

Mrs Marygold said: "It is the only youth group in Calne for disabled children, we have a waiting list as we can only supply places for ten people and we have been a full group since day one, so we are keen to get as much funding as we can as we are wanting to increase that to 15.

"It doesn't feel fair, we are having to turn people away when there is such a need."

They have applied for funding from the council, but it will only cover the additional five places, meaning money would still need to be sourced to cover the original ten children.

Volunteers from the charity Barnardo's work with the children and the committee are keen for them to continue to do so.
