TENANTS from a housing association in Calne have been warned about the dangers scams thanks to a new musical drama performed earlier this month.

100 tenants from 11 housing schemes across Wiltshire came to watch the performance of Scambusters at Beversbrook Sport Centre, which warned house association residents about the dangers of rogue traders, deception theft and fake promotions.

Based on true stories, it highlighted how easy it is to fall victim to fake schemes, and was performed by three professional actors from Salisbury-based Solomon Theatre Company.

It was developed partnership with trading standards, police and the community safety partnership as a memorable way of spotting potential fraud.

Representatives from Age UK, Victim Support, Bobby van, the fire service and trading standards were also there to offer advice.

Forest Paget, director of Solomon Theatre said: “There is a fear of being a victim of fraud and scams and people feel ashamed if they are tricked or taken in.

“Musical theatre can address this emotional topic by helping victims understand their feelings while ensuring all householders are aware of the risks and how to keep themselves safe”.

According to the Chartered Trading Standards Institute, rogue traders cost British consumers around £442 million, most commonly targeting elderly and vulnerable people.

Wiltshire Police has launched a range of initiatives to help householders protect themselves and their savings while targeting those that prey on vulnerable residents.
