BOWLS clubs battled on the green at a gala organised in memory of one of their community.
Altogether 13 clubs took part in the gala, held at the Calne Bowls Club on Anchor Road, in memory of Jim Wilkie.
Club secretary Alan Hewitt said they are already looking forward to next year’s event.
“It was a very successful day,” he said. “It was nice to see so many people turn out in Jim’s memory.
“He was known as Gentleman Jim, as he was a tall and upright but quietly spoken Scotsman, and he was just a lovely fellow.
“His widow put up a trophy and invited clubs he was involved with and everyone enjoyed it.”
The club, which has been hosting bowls in Calne for 103 years, is now looking forward to its next event, a sponsors’ evening on Wednesday (aug 30) when staff from the firms which support the club have been invited to come and meet members, see how much good their sponsorship does and try their hand at the game for themselves.
Staff from main sponsor Imagine Cruising, which is based in Royal Wootton Bassett, 3D Computers of Chippenham, Jam Print of Calne and Calne funeral directors Odette will be taking part.
Club chairman and men’s captain Paul Mackie said: “We’re hoping everyone enjoys it, the idea is to have a fun evening and say thank you and spread the word about bowls.”
The club is keen to welcome new members. For more information call Mr Mackie on 01249 822087.
