A 62-year-old man who groped a young woman who has learning difficulties has been spared an immediate jail term.

Kenneth Isaac groped the victim, who is in her early twenties, and told her he would have liked to take her out if he were a younger man.

And he initially accused her of making up the allegations until DNA tests found traces of his saliva on her.

The court heard that the matter came to light when a member of staff where she lived overheard her telling a pal about it.

Colin Meeke, prosecuting, told Swindon Crown Court that Isaac knew about the girl's problems as he was a friend of the family.

Early last year she said that she was a relative's house when Isaac was there and he 'tried stuff on with her'.

"She describes him pulling her top down," Mr Meeke said.

He behaved inappropriately and made a lewd suggestion to her.

Mr Meeke said he also made a series of remarks, telling her if he were 10 years younger he would like to take her out.

When he was arrested he said the victim was an 'attention seeker' and said that he had never been alone with her.

He also alleged that she had made false allegations against other people, which was not true though she had been preyed on by another sex attacker in the past.

Mr Meeke said that his DNA was found when part of the girl was swabbed, leading to an early guilty plea.

Isaac, of Ridgemead, Calne, admitted sexual assault between December 30, 2015, and February 9, 2016.

Mike Jeary, defending, said that when he was confronted he did all the wrong things by trying to blame her and should have known better.

Passing sentence Judge Tim Mousley QC said: "She is someone who has various learning difficulties and you knew that.

"What you did when you committed this offence was disgraceful.

"The aggravating features are that the victim was particularly vulnerable and the location it took place.

"You are 62 and have no relevant previous convictions and that reduces the sentence that I have in mind."

He imposed an eight month jail term suspended for two years with 25 days of rehabilitation activity requirement, a programme requirement and told him to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
