Every child at a Calne school had the chance to take part in a global campaign to highlight the benefits of learning outdoors.

The pupils at St Margaret’s Preparatory School, Calne were taking part in Outdoor Classroom Day and it proved a big hit with children aged from three to 11.

Each year group used the opportunity of working outside to explore different aspects of education that ranged from using sticks to form grammatical sentences, to visiting a bank and a library to learn about technology.

Reception Class Teacher and Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator Kim Callaway said: “At St Margaret’s we are involved in outdoor learning on a regular basis but it was good to be able to join in this global initiative to highlight what a positive experience it can be.”

The three year olds in Kindergarten spent time in the school’s mud kitchen and pretended to make healthy soup by gathering leaves. The Reception class went out and about in Calne to see technology in every-day life; they particularly enjoyed sending a parcel to Paddington Bear’s Aunt Lucy when they visited the Post Office!

Year 1 children created a wildlife pictogram, while the Year 2s were inspired by play equipment to create alliterated tongue twisters. The Year 3 classes made their own bird feeders and the children in Year 4 enjoyed writing stories with a wildlife theme.

For the older children at the top of the school, it was a chance for the Year 5s to use twigs to show punctuation and learn about food chains, whilst the Year 6 pupils became space scientists.
