FESTIVALGOERS in Calne will be plunged back into the nineties after organisers of the seventh annual Calnefest announce the main headline act.

In the wake of the Britpop resurgence, the community and entertainment festival organisers announced that Space, who have sold more than 2 million albums worldwide, would be joining the party at the Recreational Ground on June 3.

The announcement, which has been welcomed with open arms by the festival's loyal supporters, is part of a campaign by organisers to make the festival bigger and better.

Calnefest, which began in 2011 with Councillor Glenis Ansell, then Calne mayor, as a way of promoting local bands and raising the profile of the town.

"I think we have certainly grown into a niche event," she said. "Someone said to me recently that we are a small community based event that punched well above our weight and we do - our ticket prices are great, we provide a good family day out and we are still able to funnel money back into the community.

"Over the last six years, we have managed to give about £10,000 back to the community and more recently we have donated money to John Bentley School and to David Stevens' open water swimming event in memory of his son.

"I started this festival up as a one time thing and I couldn't believe the response we got. At the end of the day, it was created to raise the profile of the town and I think we have done that."

Every year, the six-strong committee and its army of volunteers try to improve the festival experience for the whole town and in recent years, the addition of a comedy tent, a cocktail bar and a newcomers spot has strengthened their efforts but more surprises have yet to be announced.

"More annoucements will be made shortly so people will have to watch this space," Coun Ansell added.
