SPURRED on by his family history of heart problems, a 10-year-old from Calne has raised more than £350 for the British Heart Foundation by completing a mini-triathlon.

Luke Elkins, of Westerham Walk, who came up with the idea of doing his own mini-triathlon last month, swam 375 metres, cycled 11.6 miles and ran 1.35 miles to raise money for the charity which is close to his heart.

He said: "My granddad had a heart attack six years ago and my great granddad also had heart surgery when he was 90. He is 97 now. When I first did it I thought of doing a run and then I thought about a cycle and then my mum said why not do a swim and go for a mini triathlon.

"I am quite proud but it was very hard, especially the cycling. Thank you to my granddad for taking me on the cycle and to my sister Lauren for doing the swimming and a bit of the run with me."

Luke, who has received donations from family, friends and organisations such as the Matt Fiddes Marital Arts School who he trains with three times a week, completed the challenge in a few hours.

"It was something he took on himself and wanted to do. We are so proud of him," his mother Lorraine Elkins said. "He is the sort of child who loves a challenge and after he completed it, his granddad took us all for a celebratory hot chocolate and he has already asked me what can he do next year. He is such a generous little boy and I can't believe how much he has raised."
