MEMBERS of the Calne Recreational Club got together to celebrate the club's 125th anniversary with a family fun day and barbecue over the bank holiday weekend.

The rain failed dampen the spirits of the club members on Sunday afternoon as they took part in school sports day-inspired games and fundraising for Prospect Hospice in memory of long-term member Geoff Green.

John Buckland, one of the committee members, said: "It went really well despite the weather. We raised £440 for Prospect Hospice as one of our members passed away last week.

"We had bowling, rounders, sack racing and at the end of the day we had a free barbecue. We also had space hopper racing and egg and spoon races for the children and the grown ups."

The recreation ground, which is owned by the town council, and includes playing fields, tennis courts, a bowling green, basketball hoops, table tennis and a children's play area, is shrouded in history even serving as a military hospital for serving soldiers in the First World War.

"We do something most months and there always something going on," Mr Buckland added. "It was just a really fun day for grown ups and kids alike."
