AS the political fallout following the EU referendum deepens, Calne Labour Party has backed Jeremy Corbyn to continue as Labour leader.

The 67-year-old’s position looks precarious after a secret no confidence ballot in which 172 MPs voted against him, with only 40 in favour, and the threat of a leadership contest between himself and former shadow business secretary Angela Eagle.

Calne Labour Party took a vote themselves on the issue, with 18 in support of Mr Corbyn and eight against.

Party chairman John Boaler said: “I supported Corbyn in the leadership election last year and I think it is too soon to end it after only nine months.

“I think there were a lot of people in the Labour Party who never supported him in the first place.

“There has been unease about his style and leadership.

“They have seen this as the moment to strike as they can see there may well be an early election and they think he will not stack up well.

“The Labour Party is hugely disappointed with the result and quite shocked by what has happened.”

“David Cameron must take some of the blame as he allowed the campaign to go for too long. This worked against him in the end.”
