FOLLOWING a series of accidents along the A3102 including the fatal crash of Tracey Rooke two years ago the Wiltshire Council has called in a review of the road.

Cabinet member for highways and transport Philip Whitehead called for the review as there had been more than five injury accidents in the last three years along the road.

The A3102 came back into public attention two weeks ago when Pat Jefferies, of Wootton Bassett, was injured in the early hours of Monday morning, June 13, while being driven to work.

Coun Whitehead said in an email: “All accidents can be tragedies for the families concerned and the local residents.

“Wiltshire Council has worked very hard to reduce accidents with injuries resulting and since 2001 these have been reduced by 40-50%.

"I am informed of every serious accident in Wiltshire and receive the police report when it is issued.

“I am aware of the previous fatality, the coroner’s comments and the work that was carried out as a result.”

The cabinet member highlighted that the process of making the road safer was not as simple as reducing the speed limit.

Explaining that if vehicles are already driving in an unsafe manner given the road conditions reducing the limit to 30 mph will not stop that and may well introduce dangerous overtaking manoeuvres.

“It is very easy to introduce something that has unexpected consequences that are as dangerous,” he added.

“After the 2014 fatality we carried out a number of improvements and changes and we will be guided again by the proposed review.”
