IN the wake of the EU Referendum and the resignation of the prime minster, speculation as to who will take the reins is already rife.

Chippenham MP, Michelle Donelan, although believing it too early to talk about potential new prime ministers, said she considers Boris Johnson to be front runner for PM.

This morning, David Cameron, resigned as Prime Minister after Britain voted to leave the European Union in an emotional farewell in front of Number 10 at 8.30am.

Mrs Donelan said: “It is an unbelievable and important day for Britain. He (Boris Johnson) is the clear front runner but there is also Theresa May and George Osbourne.

“It is too early to say. I would want to hear what he stands for and we are not sure of that yet.

“There could be other candidates to come forward. We are at a monumental period of change.

"I do not expect any more resignations. He was always going to go."

Many believe that the former Mayor of London’s chance to be the next PM has soared since he became the figurehead for the Vote Leave Campaign.

The top four candidates touted for the role are Boris Johnson, George Osborne, Theresa May and Michael Gove.

MP Donelan campaigned for an In Vote at the referendum but believes the party needs to unite behind the public’s decision.

“We have to remember that the Conservative Party gave us this referendum and it is a display of democracy,” she added.

“I do not think this is in the best interest of the country but it is important that we exercise this decision and we get the best deal for Britain.

“It is going to be a difficult and hard process and you have to look at the history of making trade deals but this is what the people of Britain and Wiltshire wanted.

“People were voting for a number of different reasons. It was brought down to immigration but that was not the only factor.

“People got fed up with the bureaucracy and control by people we had not elected. I myself am naturally Eurosceptic.”
