STAFF and pupils at John Bentley School have been left devastated by the sudden death of their assistant head teacher.

Martyn Dunn, who had taught at the school for 18 months, died suddenly on Wednesday, June 8, and was described in an emotional tribute as “a lively and energetic teacher” whose ideas were often unique.

The 34-year-old had been taking part in a five-a-side football game at Stonar School in Atworth when he collapsed in the early evening. It is understood he had suffered from a heart condition.

He leaves his partner Katie Lambert, their son Teddy, his two step-daughters Livvy and Cammy, his parents Steve and Julia Dunn and his younger little sister Sarah Dunn.

Mr Dunn joined John Bentley as assistant head in late 2014 and had previously served as a science teacher at Melksham Oak Community School for 10 years.

Head teacher of John Bentley School Jason Tudor led the tributes, praising his many contributions to the school.

He said: “It is with great sadness that we confirm the tragic news that Martyn Dunn, assistant head teacher at The John Bentley School, has passed away at the age of 34.

“Mr Dunn was a lively and energetic teacher whose passion for educating the young people of Calne knew no bounds and whose love of teaching science inspired hundreds of students in the 18 months in which he worked at the school.

“As assistant head teacher, Mr Dunn was at the heart of the exciting developments which are taking place at The John Bentley School, leading the way on developing a rich and vibrant new curriculum fit for the most forward thinking of schools.

“His ideas and creativity were often unique and he was always motivated to do what is right for the young people of Calne so that they could enjoy bright futures in whichever direction they would eventually choose.”

His partner Ms Lambert said: “Dunny was a hero. A legend. The girls, Teddy and I knew that every day of living with him.

“We cannot live another day with him, so sharing your stories and seeing your sorrow reminds my family of the legend and hero that was our Dunny.”
