A man from Calne, who is supporting England in France for the full four weeks, has spoken of his experience of the violence in Marseilles.

Garry Murphy flew out to the country last week and has witnessed both the violence in the Stade Velodrome and at the square in the Old Port.

The Calne Town Football Club coach said: "Please don't let the media tell you England fans rioted. Hundreds of Russians dressed in balaclavas, helmets and some with batons attacked peaceful England fans in the town square.

"I witnessed the Russians walk past with intent prior to the blood shed and it was the peaceful fans that were targeted not the usual drinking singers.

"It was the worst and most intimidating situation I have seen in all my travels. I know someone who has flown home and will never follow England again at this tournament because of this violence."

The attacks, which have left one English fan in critical condition, have been condemned by UEFA and the organisation has since opened diciplinary proceedings against Russia's football union.

Mr Murphy had also attended the match between Russia and England after a 1-1 draw saw tensions come to a head.

He said: "Russian flares were sent across from the stands into the English section and there were also shocking scenes upon the final whistle as Russian supporters ran through security to attack English fans with no respect for the wheelchair access area.

"The worrying thing for me is police are dealing with IS threats and at that stadium, there were no police inside."

UEFA have threatened to remove the two teams from the competition if the violence continues and several English fans, one as young as 16, have been prosecuted by French police this morning.

Football fans across the world have also called for the World Cup tournament to be stripped from Russia in 2018 following the organised violence by 150 Russian fans.

Mr Murphy added: "Russia is in no place to be holding a World Cup in my view and FIFA should take stance and pull them from this tournament. I for one will never go back to Moscow again."
