TWO St Mary’s school girls are overjoyed after a successful call-up to represent the England U19 lacrosse team for two home internationals.

Jemima Brown, 17, and Iona Westwood, 17, were both called up to the squad to face Wales and Scotland in a friendly at the Surrey Sports Park in Guildford.

England ran-out convincing winners on both occasions winning 20-2 and 21-0 respectively with the St Mary’s girls both finding the net.

Iona, who has been playing since she was 11 years old, said: “It was so much fun and a really great experience.

“The day was amazing, just to be there and be a part of it all and the atmosphere around it.

“We all managed to score one each apart from the goalkeeper obviously. It was a good match and the scores on the day really did not reflect play.

“We got there quite early to have a team talk, a warm up, stick checks and sing the national anthem.

“I did not lead the anthem my voice is terrible. The anthem was a team effort.”

Physical education teacher Ruby Smith also played for the full England Senior A Team during the event which took place between April 16-17.

Both students are currently in the middle of their A Levels and are set to move into their final year this September.

Jemima said: “It was great playing for England and there was an amazing atmosphere.

“This is my first ever international. A few weeks ago we got an email saying that we were selected.

"I have been playing since Year Seven and have played counties and regionals before.

"It was different to the majority of the matches that I have played.
