JOHN Bentley School's girl’s football team are in the running to play at Wembley after becoming South West champions.

Before Christmas the Calne school’s girls' football team played in the football league girls' cup run by Swindon Town. The girls were unbeaten in their six games against teams from around Wiltshire, with no goals conceded. From that the girls went through to the area finals, representing Swindon Town.

They were one of eight teams, the others being Yeovil, Plymouth Argyle, Cardiff City, Newport, Bristol Rovers, Bristol City and Exeter City. The day was tough with seven games played, and it was a very close tournament, but once again the school was unbeaten, letting only four goals in. John Bentley finished level on points with Bristol Rovers, and after drawing in a head to head, were on top of the league on goal difference.

Samantha Shuker, head of PE at John Bentley, said: “The girls were amazing, lifting their performance against some very tough opposition. The commitment and teamwork on display was outstanding. We now go on to the South finals with four other teams. If successful we will go on to play in the finals at Wembley before the Johnstone Paint Trophy Final on Sunday, April 3.”
