McCarthy & Stone has submitted their plans for 32 retirment apartments in the centre of Calne, opposite Sainsbury's.

The retirement housebuilder wants to redevelop and regenerate brownfield land on The Pippin with high-quality retirement living apartments for private sale.

The plans have been submitted to Wiltshire Council following a community consultation programme, including a public exhibition in the town hall.

McCarthy & Stone say the proposals will help boost Calne’s local economy and regenerate a brownfield site with 32 one and two bedroom apartments.

The development will also include 22 car parking spaces and landscaped gardens.

Shane Paull, McCarthy & Stone’s Regional Managing Director, said: “We are grateful for the local feedback we have received through our public consultation.

"The input from the community has been valuable in helping to shape our plans for this scheme.

"We have sought to provide a scheme that makes use of this brownfield site, respects the surrounding town centre, and provides an attractive building on the edge of the town centre”

“There is a real need to increase delivery of this type of specialist housing to match the rapidly ageing population and the proposed development would help to meet this housing need.

“This scheme will be a real boost for the local Calne economy with future residents of the site on average spending a higher proportion of disposable incomes, as evidenced by the Institute of Public Care, in nearby local shops and services."

The developers also believe that the older residents who would move into the planned apartments would release under-occupied family housing on the market.

It is hoped that this would help stimulate the housing chain and enable young families and first-time buyers to have a better opportunity within the local housing market.

Anyone who was unable to attend the exhibition can visit the project’s dedicated website www.mccarthyandstone-consultation.co.uk/calne where they will have the opportunity to view the information which was on display.
