SPITFIRE pilot Joy Lofthouse gave pupils in Lyneham an insight into the Second World War during a visit on Tuesday.

The war veteran, 92, from Cirencester, transported 18 different types of planes, including Hurricanes and Tiger Moths, to airfields throughout England and Scotland during her time in the Air Transport Auxillary.

Her visit was part of the Goldfinch class, years three and four, topic on the Second World War.

Teacher, Miri Purse, said: "She told them about when she started as a pilot she couldn't drive a car, we thought that was strange.

"She said she was really good at sport and co-ordination and that helped her with the gears and flying the plane."
