All the fun of traditional outdoor play and learning used alongside the latest in technology came together when children at a Calne school put a new twist on education.

Every pupil at St Margaret’s Preparatory School took part in a range of Culture Week activities when the emphasis was on outdoor learning.

The favourite activity of the week was den building, where the pupils split into their four house groups and were given the challenge of creating their own outdoor environments.

Outdoor Learning Co-ordinator Kim Callaway said: "Parents and grounds staff were involved with supplying materials for the children to use to create their dens.

"Everyone was very excited about the activity which taught aspects such as the importance of working together in order to build large constructions."

Each of the dens had to be big enough to house around 50 children aged from three to 11. Other activities during the week included making Stone Age tools, creating an outdoor musical area and story-telling around a campfire. Earlier in the week Year 6 children used iPads to create sound trails for younger pupils to follow through the school grounds.

The children were also given a new way of thinking about maths as they took inspiration from nature to investigate the hexagon shapes of honeycomb created by bees.
