PASSENGERS using the Calne Community Transport in recent weeks have enjoyed a much smarter minibus thanks to a generous bequest from a former Calne doctor.

Dr Olive Sharp, who was based at Northlands Surgery for a number of years, kindly left Calne Community Transport a donation in her will.

That donation has now been spend on a much cleaner, smarter and newer mini-bus for the community transport group to assist those who are unable to use public transport.

Secretary Sue Twyman said: “We were just so thrilled. We would not have been able to do it without this legacy we would have had to spend all our funds so it’s been quite vital.

“We will be spending less on maintenance which has costs us a tremendous amount in recent years. We are also hoping that because it’s newer we can get more people using it to generate more business which brings us income.”

The door-to-door service is available to anyone who needs it and can be booked through the Transport Co-ordinator based in the Community Hub in Calne on Tuesday and Friday mornings between 10am and 12.30pm.

The group is also looking for new drivers, organisers and fundraisers to volunteer their time to keep the vital community service running.

“It’s such a valuable service for the community and its vital we get some new people in to run it in terms of management and to organiser fundraising for us,” the secretary added.

“We have tried to keep our charges down to the people who use us. Our aim is to continue to do that.”
