YOUNG artists at Lyneham Primary School got their hands dirty on Monday (Oct 19) making ceramic poppies for their remembrance celebrations next month.

The ceramic poppies will now be fired by ceramic artist Jane Johnson, who was helping pupils during the day, before being returned to the school in time for their remembrance ceremony on November 9.

The Community Remembrance Service, held in the Remembrance Garden of the school, is open to community members as well as staff, pupils and parents.

Many pupils at the school got stuck into the shaped clay adding a base layers of paint and creating their black centre before re-painting them in their traditional red.

Parents, servicemen and members of the Royal British Legion, all helped pupils with painting the poppies which will create an outdoor remembrance display.

Tom Blundell, chair of the Royal Wootton Bassett RBL, said: “The children enjoyed it, it was very fun.

“What we are looking at is our business people and government of tomorrow. The children will grow up and the way we train them now will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

“Hopefully they learn the lessons of what the poppies are, both World Wars and the subsequent ones too.”

After the community service on November 9, coffee and biscuits will be available to visitors in the staffroom. A second service will take place in Bradenstoke on November 11.
