PLATINUM couple Tom and Joan Reynolds celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last week.

Tom, 91, and Joan, 89, met in Doncaster, where Mrs Reynolds was born and brought up, when Lancaster Bomber pilot Mr Reynolds was transferred to RAF Finningley in Doncaster.

They were married at St Peter’s Church in Bentley, Doncaster on September 8, 1945, before travelling to Blackpool on their honeymoon and spending their next 50 years together in Doncaster.

Both were regular members of the Glider Club in Doncaster. Mr Reynolds' passion for flying came from his time as Flight Engineer for the RAF during the Second World War.

He was shot down over Belgium and was missing presumed dead but was actually underground with the resistance who moved him through various locations through Belgium and France before returning him to the UK.

Mr Reynolds has documented this incredible journey in a book entitled I Thank God, which he wrote for his family at the age of 85.

The couple moved to Spain for ten years on the advice of doctors after Mr Reynolds needed four heart bypasses, in the hope that a warmer climate would to help prolong his life.

They spent 10 years in Spain with son John, who owned a sports bar in Benidorm.

Mrs Reynolds said: “It was nice in Spain but we were glad to get back to England. It was good but there’s nowhere that’s like England. It’s only the weather that you would go for.”

The last ten years the pair have lived in Duncan Street in Calne to be closer to family, where they joined the Calne Royal Air Force Association.

As well as son John, the couple have two grandchildren, Fiona and Rick, and four great grandchildren, Kirsty, Katie, Callum and Riley.

Mrs Reynolds said: “You have your arguments just like everyone else but you get over it. We have a good son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren who come over. The grandchildren are always visiting with the great grandchildren, and it’s a very happy family."
