THE honey in Arkell’s organic ale Bee’s is proving so popular in Calne, even a swarm of bees have visited to give it a try.

Drinkers at the Lansdowne Hotel, owned by Arkell’s Brewery, in Calne were given a shock yesterday evening when a swarm of bees landed on one of the outdoor benches.

As well as the Arkell’s new Bee’s ale, they also produce a Best Bitter Beer, affectionately known as 3Bs.

Manager of the Lansdowne Strand, June Notman, said: “They arrived about 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon and landed on one of the benches.

“Then about 6 o’clock we thought they had gone but they were forming a hive under the bench.

“We called a bee keeper out and they collected them."

Publicans weren’t put off by the extra buzz in the atmosphere however as they continued to enjoy one of the hottest days of the year.

Mrs Notman added: “There were a few people about, we cordoned off the area and had signs up but it didn’t put people off. The bee keeper said they would not attack as they had nothing to protect.”

Arkell’s website describes a pint of Bee as golden premium ale with a light fresh taste with the organic honey providing a delightful and surprising flavour.

The Lansdowne Strand, which is Grade II listed and is one of the most prominent buildings in the town centre, was bought by Wiltshire brewery Arkell’s eight years ago.
