A CLASS of year three pupils at Derry Hill Church of England Primary School have raised more than £70 for the British Heart Foundation.

The 30 children raised the money by selling more than 150 hearts made of salt dough, a modelling material made from a mixture of flour, salt and water.

Teacher Tina McEvoy said: “The children had great fun making the salt dough hearts and it was a valuable learning experience in that we were able to encompass many areas of the curriculum.

“Not only did the children enjoy getting their hands dirty and very red making the dough, they also designed their own fundraising posters, developed their financial handling skills and undertook some data analysis creating tally charts and bar charts in ICT.

“This would not have been possible without the support of parents and children across the school in buying our hearts. So, as a class we would like to thank everyone that supported us.”

The seven-year-old pupils were investigating what influences people when decided how money is spent, including donating to charity, during their personal, social, health and emotional education.

The class then instigated their own enterprising activity that would enable them to raise funds for the charity which is the largest independent funder of cardiovascular research.
