The husband of Calne nursery owner Rachel Cartmell has spoken of the couple’s relief after police ended an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse.

Richard Cartmell said that he was pleased that the bail of two people arrested by police in relation to alleged sexual abuse against children at Little Angels Nursery had been cancelled.

The nursery was closed by Ofsted in August after police arrested a 37-year-old woman.

Mr Cartmell said: “It’s all good news that nobody was hurt and we can move on with our lives now.

“No matter what we have lost as a family, something that could have happened to a child is a million times worse.

“We are now moving on with our lives it’s just a blessing that nothing has happened to anyone.”

The couple were told by Wiltshire Police on Monday that bail had been cancelled following an investigation the force described as comprehensive and thorough.

Mr Cartmell said: “The police have been professional with it and very good with us.

"It’s been ongoing for such a long time when we got the phone call on Monday it was a big relief.

“It’s been difficult because we didn’t know anything about what had happened.

“As far as Rachel and I were concerned the staff we amazing and when this all came out we didn’t believe it. The rest of the staff were as shocked as we were.

“It was a wonderful place to be, it’s such a shame it’s gone, it was a massive part of the community.”

With the nursery shut throughout the lengthy investigation, Mrs Cartmell was forced to liquidate her company and claimed she had “lost everything”.

A statement from police, released earlier today, said that the investigation into alleged sexual abuse was over and that two people, a 37-year-old woman and a 48 year-old man, who were previously arrested had had their bail cancelled.

A police spokesman said: "Whilst we appreciate this has caused a considerable amount of concern in the local community, due to the nature and scope of the investigation, it was imperative given the information passed to us that our enquiries were comprehensive and thorough.

“We have worked closely throughout this investigation with a number of appropriate partner agencies and continue to do so in supporting all parties involved.

“We would like to thank the public for their understanding and co-operation with this investigation.”
