Calne will have more than just wood on the bonfire this year after a Guy Fawkes competition received twice as many entries as last year.

The 17 entries, from local schools St Dunstan Primary and Cherhill Primary and Calne District Ranger Unit, will be judged by Mayor Heather Canfer on Saturday.

The gates at Beversbrook will open at 5pm with the Guys being on display in the main hall until the judging at 5.30pm. All the Guys will go onto the bonfire but the winner will be placed on top with the winning creator given the honour of turning on the Christmas lights on November 29.

Competition organiser Tracy Howell, from Calne Town Council, said: “We did it for the first time last year and the children were so excited to turn on the Christmas lights, we decided to do the same again this year and the entrants are brilliant.

“It’s great to see the schools participate and get in the spirit of the competition. I wish them the best of luck.”

Following the lighting of the bonfire at 6pm, there will be a fire show from Wild Goose Arts at 6.15pm before the firework display starts at 7pm.
