PENSIONS Minister Steve Webb MP has backed Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate Dr Brian Mathew to win the North Wiltshire seat next May.

Dr Mathew will go up against Conservative MP James Gray, who has been an MP since 1997, in May’s general election.

Speaking in Calne Town Hall, the MP for Thornbury and Yate, Mr Webb said: “Brian is an outstanding candidate and will make a good MP for the people of North Wiltshire.

“He has real life experience and a practical approach to getting things done. North Wiltshire is surrounded by Liberal Democrat seats, it's high time it turned from Tory blue to Lib Dem gold.”

Dr Brian Mathew also took the opportunity to praise the Pensions Minister for his achievements which sees 15,000 people in North Wiltshire now on a pension scheme and 20,000 local retired people have seen their state pension rise by £16.

Dr Mathew said: “Helping those who need help and setting people free to make their own choices are fundamental Liberal principles and why I got involved.”
