The clock tower on Calne Town Hall is to get a much-needed facelift after a unanimous vote by Calne Town Council.
The restoration work on the clock, which dates back to the late 19th century, is expected to cost around £3,000 with an additional £5,000 for an automatic winding upgrade.
The automatic system will remove the chore of manual winding, which at the moment occurs once a week.
Instead, the men responsible for the clock will only need to climb to the top of the tower once a month.
Although conducting manual winding on the clock was deemed to be safe, councillors hope reducing the number of times caretakers climb up and down the tower will decrease the likelihood of accidents.
But health and safety was just one reason behind the restoration – it is also expected that the clock, which sits on the side of the Victorian building, will look better and be more accurate following the work.
