Calne Tennis Club celebrated the opening of £150,000 floodlit tennis courts at Beversbrook Sports Facility with a ceremony on Saturday.

The club raised the money needed for the new facilities over four years, through grants which enabled them to move away from the public courts at the Anchor Road ground.

Sport England, Viridor Credits and Hills Waste Solutions all contributed money, totalling £115,000.

The club also borrowed £33,000 from Calne Town Council until Section 106 money allocated as part of the new Marden Farm development becomes available.

The facilities are now available to the club’s 100 members and will also be available to members of the public .

Club secretary Catherine West said: “It was a successful day, the weather was good and we had lots of juniors from the town coming up to try tennis.

“Getting the courts was the easy part, now we have to promote the club and get the membership up and running.”

The club’s winter league season starts on October 4 and plans are already afoot for winter coaching programmes, more social tournaments and further open days.

The club also plans to develop school links to increase the number of children taking up the game.

Mrs West said: “This has been a lot of hard work and a great achievement for a small club.

“The new facility will enable the club to increase both its coaching and membership and provide a pleasant environment to play the game. We hope this is going to attract more families.”

It is almost a year since the club gained planning permission for the courts, which they obtained back in October 2013.
