Wiltshire Police have stepped up patrols in Calne after British Telecom said the 999 phone number was not working in the area.

This is currently affecting about 4,516 properties in and around the town.

Mobile phones can still be used for emergency purposes and contact with the police, fire or ambulance services.

Alternatively contact can be made directly at any police, fire or ambulance station.

The police, fire and ambulance service have put in place increased visible patrols in this area until the issue has been resolved.

Wiltshire Police said BT is working to resolve this issue as soon as possible and further updates will be provided when possible.

Further information may also be available via the internet from the service provider concerned.

The Wiltshire and Swindon Local Resilience Forum will be addressing any issues with regards to vulnerable persons within the community.

In the meantime Wiltshire Police are urging residents to stay safe and to check on elderly and other vulnerable residents within their communities.
