South West in Bloom judges took a tour of Calne on Tuesday to admire the work of town council groundsmen and community groups.

The judges received a warm welcome from the council and mayor Heather Canfer, who showed them a display of photographs of the town throughout the year in different seasons.

They walked around the town and also had a ride in a Rolls-Royce, on loan from the Atwell Motor Museum.

The tour included flower beds by the river at Beach Terrace, flowers at Market Hill by The New Wine Shop and at the town gardens.

It took in community projects, including the underpass at Abberd Way, looked after by The Friends of Abberd Brook and the wildlife area at Priestley School.

Calne mayor Heather Canfer said the judges seemed to enjoy themselves and one even took a cutting from the garden of a retirement home at The Wharf.

She said: “One of the judges said this is a beautiful hydrangea and he took a cutting from it, and I thought that was rather nice.”
