An art exhibition inspired by a popular park in Calne has opened at the town’s Heritage Centre.

It features work by members of the Calne Artists Group and is titled Castlefields Through Artists’ Eyes.

They visited Castlefields Canal and Recreation Park, just behind Patford Road and Station Road, to create pieces especially for the exhibition.

They also worked with members of the Castlefields Canal and River Park Assocation (CARP) who sat for a number of portrait sessions, and have been responsible for developing and protecting this green area.

The final result is an exhibition with a wide range of work, from watercolours and oil paintings of the landscape, to studies of found objects. Both two dimensional and three dimensional works are on display in a number of materials, including ceramic and wood.

Also on show is a Welsh slate panel, made by stone carver Geoffrey Stephenson, 50, who has been a member of the group for just over a year.

His work was inspired by the recent planting of 12 jubilee scot pines, which was organised by CARP to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

Mr Stephenson said it was easy to find inspiration for the piece because his house, on New Road, is just opposite the park.

He said: “I have been living there for 10 years and they have done a tremendous job improving the area.

“I went out there one day, picked up some leaves and laid them out onto this panel and the answer came straight away.

“I laid them out in a circle and inside the circle there are 12 copper dots fixed into the stone. They represent the new trees which were planted recently.”

The exhibition runs until November 4 at the Heritage Centre, Calne, from 11am to 4pm with free entry.
